WHY OUR CHICKEN?
Elgin Free Range Chickens are :
Our chickens are truly free range. Unlike commercial chicken, they are not kept indoors in environmentally controlled houses throughout the duration of their lives.
A humanely treated chicken is a stress-free chicken. Commercial chickens, on the other hand, are raised in severely cramped quarters where they can hardly move.
We do not administer AGPs to our chickens. In commercial chickens, AGPs are routinely administered to control micro-organisms in the intestines which in turn results in an unnatural growth rate.
Routine Antibiotic Free
Routine Antibiotics fed to commercial chickens are identical to the ones administered to humans. Overuse of these antibiotics can lead to strains of antibiotic-resistant bacteria, allowing superbugs to flourish.

Linka completed her B.Sc. in Food Science (Biochemistry) in 2006, followed by a M.Sc. in Food Science (Detection and identification of wine spoilage microbes using PCR-based DGGE analysis) in 2008 at the University of Stellenbosch. She also completed further studies in general management and completed a Management Development Programme and a Commercial Negotiation course at the University of Stellenbosch Business School in 2011 and 2012 respectively. Linka joined the EFRC team as New Product Development Technologist in February 2009. In 2010 the position of Technical Manager (heading up the NPD and FSMS teams) was created and she fulfilled this role until 2011 when she was promoted to General Manager. Linka was appointed as Executive Director, serving on the Elgin Free Range Chickens (Pty) Ltd Board, in April 2016.
Samantha has obtained her BSocSci and LLB degrees at The University of Cape Town, and has completed her Master of Business Administration (MBA) in Berlin, Germany. She has extensive management experience and among her achievements lists Winner of the VCIC 2013 competition, Entrepreneurs’ Choice Award, held at IESE Business School in Barcelona.
Martin completed his General Management studies at the University of Stellenbosch Business School in 2009 and joined the EFRC team at the end of 2010. He has also completed several other courses/workshops which includes Internal Auditing, OSHACT, Human Resources, HACCP, Hygienic design, Prerequisite Programs & Good Manufacturing Practices.
Lauren joined the EFRC team as Financial Manager in June 2012. She completed her BCompt Degree through Unisa and her Training Contract with PricewaterhouseCoopers in 2003. She brings with her a wealth of financial management experience gained across diverse industry sectors.
Received training thru the Costa Group (AUS) - International Standards of Supply Chain Management. He has been working in the Supply Chain industry for more than 20 years, with the last 10 years as an Executive for a Major Retailer group.
Cató completed her BSc Food Science degree at the University of Stellenbosch in 2008. She furthered her studies and completed her MSc degree in Food Science (cum laude) in March 2011. Cató joined the EFRC team as a Food Technologist in February 2011 and was awarded the 2011 EFRC Employee of the Year – Being a Leader prize for her commitment and dedication.

EFRC Learning Centre
At the beginning of 2015 a learning centre was established. Carla Cameron, a retired teacher, is the facilitator at the Centre. On various occasions we were commended for the smooth running of the centre. We started with a group of students enrolled for Grade 12. In June 2015 they were registered to write English and History. Most of the students passed English.

Within Elgin Free Range Chickens, The MD Jeanne Groenewald has informal group sessions with all the staff to discuss their hopes/dreams. We focus on ways to realize this and how to overcome the obstacles they face, within an informal relaxed atmosphere. This platform was developed to get to know one another and to facilitate better working relationships, but also to showcase needs are.
EFRC proudly supports Thembacare Grabouw. Located in a rural area east of Cape Town, ThembaCare Grabouw serves as the only overnight 24-hour hospice facility in a town of 65,000. This seven-bed hospice is designed to provide quality palliative care for those who are terminally ill and whose lives have been devastated by HIV/AIDS and TB.
Agape Family Ministries
Elgin Free Range Chickens is privileged and proud to be associated and to be involved with Agape Family Ministries since 2013. Agape, a non government organisation, was founded by Gerrit and Amie Coetzee in 1994 to provide care for children with special needs in and around Pineview, Grabouw in the Western Cape Province.
